Come and discover the traditional flavours of Neapolitan cuisine with a tour through the Decumani, the beating heart of the city since the 6th century BC.
We begin at the Cathedral, where we will marvel at the beauty of its neogothic style and hear the story of the miracle of the blood of San Gennaro, patron saint of the city, who also features in a mural by the famous street artist Jorit, just a few metres from the church.
If we get the nibbles, we’ll treat ourselves to some mozzarella di bufala before we walk on down Spaccanapoli, the ancient ‘decumano inferiore’ and the beating heart of the historical centre. Here, we’ll try a traditional “cuoppo” - a paper cone of fried goodies typical of Naples. Then we’ll continue on our way to take in the unique beauty of Piazza San Domenico Maggiore, the Monastery of Santa Chiara, Piazza del Gesù and the church of Gesù Nuovo.
And if the beauty of all these wonderful places hasn’t quite captivated you, the unmistakable aroma of pizza that fills Via Tribunali will definitely do so! This is the ancient Decumano maggiore, the temple of the pizzeria and of Neapolitan street food. Here we’ll give in to the temptation of a delicious pizza a portafoglio - a freshly made pizza folded up in the traditional way.
Once we reach the end of Via Tribunali, we’ll find it hard to resist the Christmas spirit that reigns all year round in Via San Gregorio Armeno. This street is famous for typical Neapolitan nativity scenes, artisan products made here by skilled craftsmen. But first, since there’s always room for dessert, before we take a look we’ll surrender to the sin of gluttony and enjoy a scrumptious Babà, maybe washed down with a cold Limoncello to help us digest!
